Commentary On A Nation
What does Thanksgiving mean to you? Is it just a day off from work. A day to eat turkey and
cranberry sauce and watch a football game on tv?
Thanksgiving is much more than that. It is a time to rejoice in the Savior, Jesus Christ, who allows us to
maintain the liberty the pilgrims fought so hard for. The Mayflower didn't sail to America
because our pilgrim fathers thought it would be a 'fun vacation'. She sailed to these shores because the
pilgrims desired religious freedom. That is freedom to worship the one and only true God in a
way that was honoring to Him and without governmental interference.
The United States of America was founded on the principles of God's Word, the Bible. These
principles have sadly been nearly eradicated from our thinking. No longer do Americans think
about the God who, not only breathed life into our great country, but into each and every citizen.
No longer do Americans think about the importance of being able to worship freely without
governmental interference. No longer do Americans think about what thanksgiving really means.
Thanksgiving has been relegated to a holiday between Halloween and Christmas and is nothing
more than a day to sit around and watch a football game and feed our bellies with whatever
'good stuff' is set before us.
We do not consider the hardships that our forefathers went through to make this nation what it
is today--- and what is it? A powerful nation with all the military savvy in the world. A wealthy
nation with all the money one could ever dream of having. A religious nation--- No! The United
States of America no longer emulates the nation she was born to be, a place where one worships
the one and only true God and who loves her neighbors as herself. The United States of America
has become a cesspool of religious contamination in that we do not honor God with our lips or
our actions.
As we look around our nation today, we see children killing children, disrespecting and killing
their parents, parents abusing and killing their children and no one is talking. Approximately
four and a half million children between the ages of infancy and five years old are in daycare for
at least part of every work day. What does this say about America? It says that we have lost the
vision of what America represents. Liberty and godly living.
How far we have come from the days when families ate breakfast together and worked together
and had respect, one for the other. Today, each family member takes off in his own direction,
doing his own thing, never to meet other family members for any activity that would strengthen
their faith and encourage education, love and respect.
For forty years we have replaced family time with the television and now we have traded the television for the internet. Why? Because we are a driven nation. Unlike our forefathers we are not driven by a strong work ethic and
incredible sense of responsibility, we are driven by envy, an emotion that drives us to do anything to anyone we wish, because we are not content with what God has given us. As a nation and as individuals we have broken the sacred tenth commandment.
"You shall not covet [envy] your neighbor's house. You shall not covet [envy] your neighbor's wife, or his
manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor."Exodus
20:17
Our envy and greed have caused us to put our children in jeopardy. They live in day care centers
around the nation from morning till evening, five days a week. On weekends, we stick them in
front of the tv or the internet... what great babysitters these inanimate objects are. Why are we
doing this to our children? Because of the envy that drives us to be better than the "guy next
door" We have to have everything he has and more--- so much more. That second car, a more
expensive house, that new boat, a fancy international vacation. We sacrifice our children and live
above our means for 'bragging rights' and none of it counts for eternity. But it feels so good to "one
up" our neighbors.
After all our possessions are gone, what do we have? Where are our children when we need
them in our old age? They've gone too and we are left alone---alone to contemplate what went
wrong. Alone to consider what this life is all about. Alone with God. When its's all said and
done it's just Me and God. What are you going to tell Him?
Thanksgiving?? How are you going to celebrate it this year? Are you going to be thankful for
what you have graciously been given by the righteous and mighty hand of God or are you going
to eat and watch football? What would the pilgrims do? What did the pilgrims do? What would God have you do?
