For Unto us a Child is Born

"For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6"

Isaiah records several characteristics about the coming Messiah.

1. He was to be a Child. This implies that this Child, a Son, was to be born into the nation of Israel as one of the covenant people.

2. He will rule over God's people and the world. The government will be on His shoulders figuratively refers to the kingly robe to be worn by the Messiah. As King, He will be responsible to govern the nation properly, unlike any ruler before Him.

3. He will have four descriptive names that reveal His character. He will be the nation's Wonderful, exceptional or distinguised, Counselor, and the people will listen to Him with gladness of spirit, knowing He is the authoritative One. Many in Israel would be anxious to hear His teaching. (Isaiah 2:3)

4. He is also the Mighty God. Isaiah meant more than His just being a hero. Isaiah understood the Messiah to be God in some sense of the term. He is the Deliverer.

5. He is also called the Everlasting Father. This term is confusing to some. How can the Son of God be The Everlasting Father? Because He is God. The parts of the Trinity are all separate yet one person. The idiom "Everlasting Father" is used to describe His relationship to time, not his relationship to the other members of the Trinity.

6. He is also called the Prince of Peace. He is the one who will bring in and maintain the time of millennial peace when the nation will be properly related to the Lord.

Together these titles give a beautiful illustration of the character of our Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ and how precious He is to all who know Him.
